New Creations Festival 08.09

The New Creations Festival pays homage to composer Tan Dun, Grammy and Oscar award-winner for movie scores including Hero and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Journey through a musical exploration of the Far East with Music Director Peter Oundjian.

Festival Highlights

  • The Map — A blend of live music and on-location video, this concerto celebrates the fusion of traditional Chinese music and dance with the Western orchestra.
  • Pipa Concerto — A Chinese plucked string instrument that has been played for nearly 2,000 years, the pipa is sure to be an audience favourite.
  • Canadian and World Premières — Débuts of new works by composers Tan Dun, Chinese-Canadian Alexina Louie, and American Jennifer Higdon.

Festival Extras

  • Pre-Concert Performance — Come early to each New Creations Festival concert and enjoy a pre-concert performance, featuring Taiko drumming groups Nagata Shachu and Raging Asian Women (RAW), and a Gong sound installation.
  • Behind The Score Chats — Join guest artists, composers, andmusicians at each intermission to hear insightful commentary about the performance.
  • Post-Concert Party for the whole audience! — Meet the composers, guest artists, and Music Director Peter Oundjian after each concert, complete with chocolate and live music by innovative Toronto music groups Autorickshaw; George Gao Ensemble, Where East Meets West; and the Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamalon.
