Highlighting the Festival's opening programme is the Canadian première of a dynamic Piano Concerto by the brilliant composer/conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. The spectacularly gifted Yefim Bronfman is the soloist. Two intriguing works for piano and orchestra launch the celebration of Messiaen: Colours of the Celestial City and Exotic Birds. Malcolm Forsyth's Accordion Concerto opens your ears to this instrument's largely unexplored power and its broad palette of colours.

Messiaen: Turangalîla Symphony
View Notes

Sparked by spectacular solo roles for piano and ondes martenot, an electronic keyboard instrument, Messiaen's Turangalîla Symphony is a colossal tapestry of exotic soundscapes that celebrates, in the composer's words, "love, joy, time, movement, rhythm, life and death." It's paired with the imposing Concerto for Organ by the distinguished Québecois composer Jacques Hétu.
